However we have decided to send it to you all because we believe it is important that all members are kept up to date with our plans and activities. You will appreciate that the decision to cancel has not been easy, and that we have left it as late as we dare. We must now now look to the future. All the bands for are already booked and the flyers are printed — we would normally have distributed them at this year’s festival as usual.
We look forward to seeing you next year. The movement out of covid lockdown is now so slow in transport, accommodation, eating places, venue restrictions, etc. We have taken the decision, very reluctantly, to cancel the festival now, 11th June. It cuts its way through the moors passing the village of Hawnby before it is joined by the River Seph that forms the neighbouring valley of Bilsdale. The vale forms the heart of the administrative district of North Yorkshire known as Ryedale and forms a distinct region of the county. Rievalulx which is literally old French for Rye valley is one of the most impressive ruined monasteries in the North, particularly because of its location in the wooded valley of the Rye.
Overlooking the abbey ruins is Rievaulx Terrace, an impressive example of eighteenth century landscaping which provides excellent views of this historic site. The terrace with its eighteenth century Tuscan temple were the property of Duncombe Park, near Helmsley and now belong to the National Trust. Between and Rievaulx Abbey was situated close to another Cistercian abbey only two miles away in the moors to the west at a site now called Old Byland.
Monks at Old Byland were confused by the tolling of the bells at Rievaulx and eventually moved to a new site at Byland near Coxwold. Helmsley is a pretty Ryedale market town situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. Its most notable features are Helmsley castle and the stately home called Duncombe Park. It was dismantled in after surrendering to the onslaught of the Parliamentary General Sir Thomas Fairfax, during the Civil War but was patched up and occupied for a time by the second Duke of Buckingham.
It is now a property of English Heritage and is a regular stage for tourism based events. In the castle was bought by a wealthy London goldsmith called Sir Charles Duncombe but his nephew Charles abandoned the castle.
Rose Cottage is a delightful cosy, comfortable cottage, ideally positioned in the picturesque village of Thorpe Bassett near Malton. It is a perfect base for exploring the East Coast, York and the North Yorkshire Moors as it is centrally located and within easy reach of all these areas.
